SOLUTION
Just as a smartphone is a PC in the palm of your hands...
A "Smart" TV is a PC from the comfort of your couch.

END GOAL:
The TV is not a stand-alone platform anymore; it's part of a larger "N-Screen" ecosystem with the PC and mobile devices, offering a seamless cross-platform experience across all screens.
For this to happen, the TV Platform must satisfy the common denominator within that ecosystem... PC functions.
Cross-Platform Ecosystem
So...
-
We start with a fast, accurate mouse function that meets user/developer expectations.
-
We separate and simplify the keyboard into its 2 functions: (1) alphanumerical and (2) shortcut keys.
-
We combine the mouse function with the shortcut keys into an ergonomic design that allows the user to intuitively utilize both functions simultaneously while addressing the TV's lean back experience*.
By doing so, we satisfy both user and developer conditions, allowing for a healthy, sustainable ecosystem.
* The above is a technical description. What we're dealing with is a design problem that requires a design solution.
Design
There are three criteria that make up the lean back experience:
-
The controller must be comfortable to use for hours at a time.
-
The controller must be comfortable to use while the user is leaning back.
-
The controller must not distract the user from the big screen - the reason for buying a TV in the first place.
For obvious reasons, we ask to meet face to face to demo our product.
